In 1997 he was honored with an Emmy Award for Outstanding Accomplishment in Weathercasting. He picked up a second Emmy Award in 2009 for his coverage of the Super Tuesday tornadoes of 2008. After graduating from college, he started off his career working at a station based in Greenville, South Carolina. He left the station after a while and joined another station in Huntsville, Alabama.

Tim Simpson Retirement|Leaving WREG-TV
In late July 2023, Simpson officially retired and left WREG-TV. This was after working at the station for 29 years serving as a meteorologist. In addition to that, he also stated that he will be focusing more on his family and the things he loves.
