Before that, Covert worked at Arkansas Auditor of State starting as a communications director in August 2015. He then became the deputy auditor of the state in November 2017. In 2019, he got the chance to fly directly into the eye of Hurricane Dorian, a category 5, with the world-renowned Hurricane Hunters. Prior to that, Covert worked at Impact Management Group in Little Rock, Arkansas as a director of digital media from January 2014 to August 2015.
His passion for meteorology began as he was growing up. Covert was scared of severe thunderstorms at an early age, but as time passed, the fear turned into an interest and finally a passion. Currently, he is obsessed with severe storms. Throughout his career, he has covered everything from tornado outbreaks to blizzards, and historic hurricanes. Covert’s reporting on Arkansas climate has earned 3 Emmy Awards, a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award, and 2 Diamond Awards from the Arkansas Society of Professional Journalists.
