When Zausch was 12 years old, his very 1st hunting trip did not end with a deer but with a broken rifle. After wounding a deer, his gun slipped from the rack on his 4-wheeler and shattered on a mountain trail. That same rifle had been used by his family since the ’60s. Now (instead of a deer) the broken gun hangs on the wall as “Jeff’s First Kill.”
Zausch is known for thriving in some of the harshest places on Earth – from tropical jungles and high mountain peaks to icy tundras and deserts. His passion for the wild started early – he grew up in the Idaho mountains where he followed his family’s hunting traditions. He spent years learning how to track, hunt, and survive by understanding nature. He was hospitalized for a couple of weeks in Dallas, TX – there doctors treated him with antibiotics delivered directly to his heart through a stent. Also, while filming “Naked and Afraid XL” in the Philippines, he battled a high fever of 105 degrees and went into anaphylactic shock from mosquito bites.
