Ben Thompson Work Experience

Thompson has worked for the BBC while covering stories across Europe, the Middle East, America, and Asia. Through this work, he has been able to interview worldly leaders, a few showbiz names, and company bosses.

He began his career at BBC while still in University where he produced the network’s morning news program, Good Morning Wales. In addition, he was later selected for a BBC Trainee Scheme where he was working in different parts of the newsroom and got a taste for television.

He later moved to London after his University education. There, he was moved to start working in the Business and Economics Unit of BBC News. While there, he was the producer for Business News which was for the rolling news service the BBC’s International Change News, BBC World, and BBC News 24. While there, he was able to learn how to explain how global trade was reshaping business and the impact of big business on peoples day to day lives.

Later on, it is when he joined BBC Breakfast as a producer where he had to swap international time zones for night shifts and early mornings. This was in order to explain how savings, pensions, pay, and money may affect people’s pockets and their personal finances.

The year 2008 saw him move in front of the camera in order for him to become the BBC’s Middle East Business Correspondent. Then, he was based in Dubai located in the United Arab Emirates, UAE. There, he spent three years traveling in the region. This includes him visiting Syria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Algeria, Lebanon, Kuwait, and Jordan. Among the difficult stories that he covered include reporting from Egypt and Tunisia during the ‘Arab Spring’ uprisings, the growing tensions in Syria, and the Dubai Financial Crisis. However, he also made time to enjoy the sunshine and beaches and learn how to kite-surf.

Later on, he moved to the United Kingdom where he was to become the Business Presenter for the BBC News during a particularly busy time for the global economy. He managed to keep viewers updated as the financial crisis dominated the headlines. He kept the viewers updated with the latest market and business news in addition to the economic fallout of the global debt crisis.

Later on, he was able to move to New York where he became the BBC’s North America Business Correspondent. There, he reported on Wall Street every morning. He was reporting live from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. This was before he met technology entrepreneurs, international investors, and business leaders in one of the world’s financial capitals. While the financial crisis was still dominating, he was able to provide a particularly volatile period for global stock markets.

This volatility went on further when Thompson covered Hurricane Sandy when it hit New York. At this time, over half a million residents were evacuated and he moved to the BBC bureau. There, he was keeping global viewers up to date with what was happening. Thompson has reported almost continuously for BBC TV and radio for about two days.  This was because he was having to sleep in the office and spend some days without water and power in his apartment in the city. While still in New York, he was able to cover the US Presidential Elections and the deadlock in American politics. This politics nearly pushed the United States into bankruptcy.
