Prior to joining the station, he worked at WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States as a meteorologist from 1974 to 2001. In 1985, Steffen became the chief meteorologist of the station. Before that, he worked as a golf caddy at Westmoreland Country Club from May 1964 to June 1969. During his time there, he caddied with actor Bill Murray, though he candied more in Wilmette, Illinois at Indian Hill Country Club.
Throughout his career as a meteorologist, Steffen has received numerous broadcast awards, and he is an active member of the West Michigan community. Additionally, he has worked with the regional Math Counts Competition and the Science Olympiad and is an honorary fundraising chair for the Grand Rapids Planetarium. Steffen is the Red Cross Heroes Campaign chairman and is also on the marketing committee and board of directors for the advisory board for Youth for Christ and the Gerald R. Ford Boy Scout Council.
