Hawkins appeared in Romeo and Juliet in 2013, playing the role of Tybalt. In 2015, joined The Walking Dead playing the role of Heath, who is a main character from Robert Kirkman’s comic series. In August 2015 he played the role of Dr. Dre in Straight Outta Compton from Universal Pictures.
Hawkins began playing the lead role on the Fox series, 24 reboot 24: Legacy in 2017. In the same year, he co-starred alongside Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, and Brie Larson in the film Kong: Skull Island. He appeared on Broadway in Six Degrees of Separation opposite John Benjamin Hickey and Allison Janney.
