In addition, she traveled to Boca Grande to report the interfering spiny-tailed iguanas eating native birds and pushing out threatened gopher tortoises.

She won a distinguished Emmy award  in 1998 after reporting the story of Monty Roberts, “A Real-Life Horse Whisperer.” He assisted in revolutionizing horse training with his non-violent methods. Smoot has 30 years of experience in broadcast journalism. She started her career as an award-winning morning news anchor and director on a radio station. Smoot has worked in Television as a reporter, anchor, and producer for the past 28 years.

Prior to joining Fox 13 News, she served at a Fox-owned and operated TV station in Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point, North Carolina where she spent 13 years anchoring 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. newscasts.
