Thomas was deployed to the Middle East, instructing pilots on weather conditions for their training missions over Iraq’s no-fly zone. He finished his active-duty military service in the fall of 2000 as a captain, guiding a 15-person organization in weather operations at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Oklahoma.
Early Career
Following his time in the military, Thomas began his full-time TV career in Fort Smith/Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he was the morning meteorologist for KHBS/KHOG-TV. He spent the following two years tracking and chasing severe thunderstorms throughout western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma.
Thomas relocated to New Orleans, “hurricane central,” in early 2003. There, he was a broadcast meteorologist for WDSU-TV, the NBC affiliate. He also covered over a half dozen hurricanes and tropical storms that impacted the southeastern United States. The Louisiana Associated Press honored his coverage of Hurricane Frances in 2004 with a “First Place for Breaking Weather” Award.
Thomas notably covered the lead-up to and during Hurricane Katrina, riding out the storm on the 11th floor of the Hilton Hotel in New Orleans. He cautioned viewers about the looming devastation during the last hours of preparation and the initial hours of impact.
Thomas can still remember the room creaking eight hours before landfall. Two hours before landfall, the hotel’s beds started shaking because of the increasing wind. That made him and multiple coworkers evacuate to the hotel lobby for safety. As floodwaters rose and crime intensified the next day, he evacuated to a sister station in Orlando alongside his remaining coworkers, staying there for the next two months.
