Prior to joining the station, he worked at WROC in Rochester, New York from 1962 to 1964. Alhart worked as a news reporter and D.J, for WTKO Radio, in Ithaca, New York, before joining WHAM. Throughout his career as a journalist, he has been honored with the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in television news, five times. He has also received honors both for best newscast and for writing. He was inducted into the New York State Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2010. He has been a volunteer with the ARC of Monroe for almost forty years and received its Community Partner Award in 1982.

Alhart and his wife hosted the annual Weekend with the Stars for Cerebral Palsy from 1980 to 1990 on WOKR-TV. In 1986, he was awarded the Community Service Award by the New York State United Cerebral Palsy Association. Alhart has received many other awards such as the VFW Award of Merit, the Mass Media Communicator Award from SUNY-Brockport, the Ithaca College Alumni Award, and the Humanitarian Award from the Rochester Police Rosewood Club. In 1996, The Salvation Army honored him with their prestigious Others Award, and in 2002, the Jewish Community Center of Rochester awarded him with the Tikkun Olam award, which is given annually to someone who shows the meaning of the words, Repairing the World.

Since 1976, Alhart has been a member of the Rochester Rotary Club where he was the president from 1987 to 1988. He also served as a Rotary District Governor from 2002 to 2003 where he was responsible for sixty-seven clubs in the Southern Tier of New York State and the Greater Rochester area. Additionally, he was honored with the oldest major civic award in the community called the 60th Annual Rochester Rotary Award. This award is presented every year to a citizen who has significantly contributed to the cultural, professional, business, or civic life of the community.
