He started working at the station as a high school intern from December 1977 to January 1978. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, WHAS11 was the only local news department using moving film. Proffitt has been working to bring this great archive back to life by showing complete scenes of the area in new films. Since joining the station, he has reported on every big story including the Standard Gravure shooting, The Carrollton Bus Crash, The Presidential nomination of Bill Clinton in New York in 1992, and The Winter Storm of 1994. He also covered Hurricane Fran in 1996, and the Flooding of 1997.
Proffitt has been the live coverage chief anchor of all three of Louisville’s Implosions; The Belknap Warehouse in 1993, The Commonwealth Building in 1994, and The Milner Hotel in 1995. He covered the breaking news of The Windstorms and Ice Storms of 2008 to 2009. In 2001, he was given first place by the Kentucky Associated Press for doing a story explaining how Directory Assistance (411) routinely gives one a wrong number. The Associated Press awarded Proffitt and Photographer Bryan Derby first place for their coverage of Rose Island in 2009. He is an active member of his community and has continued reporting on stories and helping out groups including the American Diabetes Association and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Kentuckiana.
