He says that Oklahoma is one of the toughest places for a meteorologist – Johnson handled all shifts there and he witnessed powerful tornado outbreaks. In May of the year 2003, 2 tornadoes hit back-to-back. The 1st was an EF4 – it tore through the south side of the city. The next night, an EF3 twister passed just a few blocks from the KOCO studio – it narrowly missed his neighborhood. Johnson and his weather team stayed on-air through the chaos – they delivered live updates as the storm moved through.
From July of the year 1998 to September of the year 2000, Johnson worked at KVII-TV in Amarillo, Texas. There he chased and tracked tornadoes across the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles. Before that, Johnson was a reporter and morning meteorologist at KBMT-TV in Beaumont (from March 1997 to July 1998). While there, Johnson followed Hurricane Danny as it neared Louisiana. He ended up in Grand Isle – there Johnson says that he experienced winds near 90 mph and rising waters that flooded the area.
Johnson’s very 1st on-air role came at KREX-TV in Grand Junction, Colorado – there he served as Chief Meteorologist (it was from June 1996 to March 1997). Earlier in his career (from June of the year 1993 to June of the year 1996), Johnson worked at AccuWeather – there he focused on forecasting major hurricanes and snowstorms. Johnson’s journey in weather began in the year 1991 with a 5-month internship at WHDH-TV in Boston. There he trained under Harvey Leonard (Chief Meteorologist).
