Gary Burgess Work Experience

He began his media career while working at a radio station that was located in Blackpool. There, he transitioned slowly from a teaboy to a breakfast show presenter and later to the head of programs over a nine-year period. Later on, he moved bit by bit to radio stations located in Liverpool, Guernsey, Warrington, and Glasgow. In Guernsey, he moved from music radio to speech radio and this was before he joined the lovely team at ITV Channel which is an opportunity he was called upon to take.  He counted it a privilege to have gotten an opportunity to speak to people make big decisions on the island and tell stories in addition to taking his camera and gathering news and views of the people affected.

Through his career, he was able to get a reputation for asking no-nonsense questions to people in power. This is in addition to getting the reputation of getting ways to tell people stories of those in need of a platform to air out their plight.

He lives us with the quote “Variety is the spice of life” even as he said that along the way he had gotten an opportunity to do random fun stuff. He was mostly found covering the day’s top story and blogging or tweeting when he had the opportunity.

Away from work, he was a podcast addict, lover of a cheeky iced coffee, and Netflix Banger. He took coffee anywhere with a decent view in Jersey.

Gary Burgess Illness/Death

The year 199 saw him being diagnosed with testicular cancer which was at the age of around 23 years old. The disease got to spread all the way to his lungs and chest and he had to receive three months of chemotherapy. Later in 2014, cancer made its way back to the lungs and in the year 2015, he had part of his right lung removed. He went ahead to have surgery in the month of August 2016 in order to remove the cancerous tissues that were in between his heart and the windpipe. Later on, he went ahead to become a key picture in cancer campaigns by cancer charities such as Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Later on, still in the year 2016, he began suffering from brain fog, nausea, exhaustion, and headaches. The month of January 2017 saw him being signed off work for around 18 months and was later eventually diagnosed having myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), which is also known as chronic fatigue syndrome. Burgess set up a blog in order for him to share his experiences of living with this condition and he went ahead to state that it came with many suicidal thoughts.

In the month of October 2019, a CT scan was done on him and showed that he had five inoperable tumors between his lungs and around his trachea and esophagus. These tumors required salvage therapy.

On the 3rd of November 2020, in between the coronavirus pandemic, through a video call with his oncology consultant in Southampton, he was told that his cancer was terminal with no treatment available. The oncologist went ahead and told him that he only had about six to twelve months to live. It was at this time that he retired from his broadcasting career in the month of August 2021 in order to focus on his well-being and health.

Throughout his life, he has been open about his experience of cancer in newspaper articles, television interviews, and blogs and he mostly sought to address a taboo about death. Burgess met his demise on the first of January 2022 at Jersey Hospice Care where he died at the age of 46 years. Prior to his demise, he wrote a letter that was to be shared stating:

“I’ve had the best life. I’ve had the luckiest life. I met my soul mate and the love of my life who went on to become my husband. I got to work with some of the most amazing people in newsrooms and studios doing the job I absolutely adore. And I’ve been able to share my own relatively short time on this planet surrounded by friends and loved ones who have enriched my life in ways they may never truly understand.

My greatest sadness is the prospect of leaving all of that and all of them behind. The thought of doing that to Alan is unfathomable to process, but I also know the very people who’ve shown me love and support will now wrap up those feelings around him in the coming days. It’s time for me to hand over my microphone and keyboard for others to do the talking about me, so let my final words simply be ‘thank you.’ Every person in my life has, in their own way, helped me live my best life. That’ll do.”

Gary Burgess Awards

Just shortly after his final ITV report and radio show, he was awarded a Silver Seal by Timothy Le Cocq, and Jersey’s Bailiff in recognition of his contribution to the island life.
