Bryant was born and raised to her parents Curtis Graves ( her late father) and Joanne Graves(mother ). Her father, Curtis, was a civil rights activist and a former politician of Texas. Gizelle was raised alongside her older brother Chris Graves and a sister whose identity is unknown.

Her father Curtis Graves was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on August 26, 1938, to Fregelio Joseph Graves and Mable Haydel Graves. He attended Xavier University, before transferring to Texas Southern University, where he joined Kappa Alpha Psi and graduated in 1963 with a degree in business administration. He worked as a civil rights activist and a former politician in Texas. As a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1967 to 1973, Curtis served as a significant force in the Civil Rights Movement and worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His political career was significant for its historical context. Curtis was one of only three African-American members elected in 1966, marking the first time since 1896 that a black individual had held such positions of power in Texas.
In addition to his political work, he was a successful businessman, having attended Texas Southern University and Princeton University. He worked for NASA’s academic affairs division and held the role of Director for Civil Affairs, demonstrating his commitment to public service and community engagement throughout his career. Besides being a notable figure in Texas politics and civil rights history, he currently works as an artistic photographer. On his maternal side, Graves was cousin to Marc Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League and former New Orleans mayor. Unfortunately, he passed away on July 26, 2023, at the age of 84 years.
