When joining the station she worked as the co-anchor of Action News Sunday at 6 and 11 pm and as a general assignment reporter.
She started her career at WBKB-TV in Alpena as a reporter/photographer before working her way to her hometown. Smith then worked as a reporter/anchor at WLNS-TV in Lansing, then she joined WJRT-TV in Flint where she worked for five years as a co-anchor of ABC 12 News at 6 and 11 pm before joining Channel 7.
