Glenn Beck Career
Beck moved to Corpus Christi, Texas in 1983 to work at a radio station called KZFM. In 1985, he was hired to work for WRKA’s morning-drive radio broadcast as the lead DJ. His weekday show was called Captain Beck and the A-Team. The show included the genre’s usual off-color antics; impersonations, pranks, and juvenile jokes. It slid to third in the market and then Beck suddenly departed in 1987 following a dispute with WRKA management. After some months, he was hired by KOY-FM, a phoenix Top-40 station which was previously known as Y-95. Beck was a co-host of a local program called morning zoo and was partnered with Tim Hattrick. While working at Y-95, he developed rivalry with KZZP, a local pop radio station and the the station’s morning host named Bruce Kelly.
Beck got criticism from Y-95 staff through publicity stunts and practical jokes and the rivalry was at its peak when Beck called Kelly’s wife on air and mocked her recent miscarriage. He resigned from the station in 1989 so he could accept a job at KRBE called Power 104, but was fired in the year 1990 because of poor ratings. He later relocated to Baltimore, Maryland to work in the city’s leading Top-40 station called WBSB well known as B104. While working there, he partnered with Pat Gray who was a morning DJ. During his time there, he was arrested and put to jail for speeding in his DeLorean. A former associate said that Beck was completely out of it when a station manager had gone to bail him out.
Following the firing of Beck and Gray, they stayed in Baltimore for six months planning on what to do next. In the beginning of 1992, they both moved to WKCI-FM which is a Top-40 radio station in New Haven, Connecticut. The station apologized after Gray and Beck mocked a Chinese-American caller on-air because he was offended by having Alf Gatineau, the executive producer mock a Chinese accent and playing a gong sound effect. The incident resulted in activist groups protesting. After Gray left the show, Beck continued working with co-host Vinnie Penn. In 1988, he was told that his contract was not going to be renewed at the end of 1999.
CNN’s Headline News announced in January 2006 that would be the host of Glenn Beck, a nightly news-commentary show. The show aired during weeknights and the station called the show an unconventional look at the news of the day featuring his often amusing perspective. At the end of his time at the station, he had the second largest audience after Nancy Grace. Beck won the Marconi Radio Award in 2008 for Network Syndicated Personality of the Year. It was announced in October 2008, that Beck would be joining Fox News Channel, departing from CNN Headline News. In Fox, he hosted Glenn Beck starting from January and also a weekend version. Among his first guests, was Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.
Additionally, he had a regular segment on Fridays on The O’Reilly Factor, a Fox News Channel program, called At Your Beck and Call. By September 2009, his program had attracted more viewers than all 3 competing time-slot shows brought together on MSNBC, CNN, and HLN. The high ratings of the show did not come with no dispute. Howard Kurtz, from the Washington post, reported that Beck’s style of using distorted or inflammatory rhetoric had jeopardized the channel and its journalists efforts to neutralize criticism from White House that Fox is not a news organization. Andrew Tyndall, a TV analyst, said that they are on the verge of loosing their image as a news organization.
In March 2009, he put up a campaign called the 9-12 Project which was named after 9 principles and twelve values that says embody the spirit of the American people following a day after the September 11 attacks. The project held a Patriot Camp for children in grades one to five. Beck hosted and promoted the Restoring Honor rally on 28th August 2010, held at Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.
