While he was in high school, he wanted to become a scientist and never dreamt of being on television. Later on, he became torn between being a chemical engineer and a meteorologist, and he applied to the top school in the country for forecasting since in Virginia there were no schools that had Meteorology as a major. He attended Penn State and while he was there, he worked for the Campus Weather Service and provided forecasts for radio stations throughout Pennsylvania.
In addition, his most memorable forecast was when emergency planners handling the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant meltdown requested to know which areas to evacuate as a result of radiation fallout. He spent his Christmass and summers working for the Atmospheric Administration and the National Oceanic, the umbrella organization for the National Weather Service. Furthermore, he worked alongside Dr. Vern Dvorak to develop methods of estimating the strength of tropical systems from satellite pictures. The methods developed are to date used extensively by the National Hurricane Center to estimate how strong tropical systems are when they are far away to be accessed by hurricane hunter aircraft or are in between recon flights.
After he graduated, he worked at Accu-Weather in State College, Pennsylvania where he served as a meteorologist in addition to doing radio forecasts for other clients like municipalities, ski resorts, and power companies. After working at Accu-Weather for a year, he left the station and joined WeatherCenter Inc. in Ithaca, New York Area where he served as a meteorologist till 1983. While he worked at WeatherCenter, he did the same type of forecasting for clients including; radio stations across North America, Exxon’s offshore oil rigs, and The Boston Globe.
Furthermore, he was able to secure his first television job at WWBT/TV 12 in Richmond where he served as a weekend meteorologist and weekday reporter for four years. Later on, he joined WTTG, the FOX station in Washington, D.C. where he served as a weekend meteorologist and weekday reporter for 2 years. His wife convinced him to work in apply at 13News Now and he has currently forecasting continuously for Hampton Roads for over 39 years.
