Joe came to Action News 5 on the same day he graduated from Christian Brothers University on the 20th of May 1978. He returned to his alma mater in May 2022 to deliver the Opening Address where the University bestowed an Honorary Doctor of Public Service on the community servant and veteran journalist.

Joe relishes visiting with the people of the Mid-South and narrating their stories on WMC, Tennessee’s very first television station. He presently serves as President of the Memphis Rotary Club which was chartered in 1914 as the 96th Rotary Club in the world. Birch has earned multiple awards for his civic and charitable endeavors. In 2009, Joe was titled “Newsmaker of the Year” by the Memphis Gridiron Show, Inc., an award he treasures because it was one-time bestowed on Joe’s hero, the late entertainer Danny Thomas, creator of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
