Born in Schenectady, New York to an Irish-American father and a Puerto Rican mother, Morales was raised in Puerto Rico and later returned to his roots in Upstate New York to attend the atmospheric sciences program at prestigious Cornell University. In college, Morales won the student weather forecasting contest, rowed for the Cornell Crew, and later worked as a disc jockey and sportscaster for student-run radio station WVBR.

Morales works as a meteorologist at NBC 6. He has been working for a long as a broadcast meteorologist in South Florida, where he worked as a reassuring television presence for almost three years. He earned recognition in 2017 with the John Coleman Broadcast Award at the National Tropical Weather Conference.
Morales became a civil servant with the U.S. National Weather Service after he graduated in 1984, where he became a Lead Forecaster in Puerto Rico before taking a position as Chief of the South American Desk at the National Center for Environmental Predictions in Washington D.C.
The Univision Network and its Miami station WLTV Channel 23 was his first job, where he worked as Chief Meteorologist from 1991 to 2002. Then worked as Chief Meteorologist for WSCV Telemundo 51 from 2003 to 2008. There he became the first Latino to substitute as a meteorologist on NBC’s Weekend Today show and did so multiple times. Morales became Chief Meteorologist for NBC’s Miami station WTVJ NBC-6 in 2009, where he still works today.
Morales is among the few weather presenters selected to be a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). His most important scientific recognition was when he received the 2007 AMS Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Advance of Applied Meteorology. He holds the National Weather Association Seal of Approval for Radio, the AMS, and TV weather casting and has won from both organizations which is the Broadcaster of the Year Award. Morales won three regional Emmy Awards, one at each station he has worked in. Presently he has won the Silver Circle Award, recognized for the quality of his contributions to television.
Morales was part of Vice President Al Gore’s White House conference on climate change and global warming. He relocated to the White House at the invitation of President Barack Obama in 2014 for the release of the Third National Climate Assessment. He has been selected twice to co-authoring studies in 2012, and 2017 pertinent to America’s Weather Enterprise and National Academies of Sciences (NAS) committees.
Morales is the author of a Spanish-language reference book on hurricanes 2000 titled Huracanes. From being on the board of directors’ participation in multiple South Florida non-profits, Morales mentors young scientists, to having piloted for Angel Flight Southeast, an organization that provides free flights so children and adults can be able to access doctors from afar.
