From April 1997 to December 2006 he worked as an evening anchor and reporter where he anchored the 5 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts. Before that, Evans worked as a sports director and executive producer at WCTI TV in New Bern, North Carolina from April 1989 to September 1992. He earned several awards including being a five-time TV News Anchor of the Year from Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas in Division II. Evans also won a number of first place awards such as Best Podcast and Best Hard News Feature in 2020. He won the latter, after reporting on the Hurricane Florence: Memories of Mercer Avenue story.
Evans has donated his time as an event host or emcee to a number of service organizations in the community. Some of this organizations include Red Cross, JDRF, Communities in Schools, American Cancer Society, and The Willie Stargell Foundation among others. Presently, he is on the board of the Purple Heart Foundation of North Carolina.
