Sutherland first appeared on screen, in 1983 when he played the role of Bill in Max Dugan Returns alongside his dad Donald Sutherland. In 1984, he competed for the role of Glen Lantz in the American supernatural slasher film, A Nightmare on Elm Street. He moved to Hollywood when he was revered for his role as Donald Campbell in the drama movie, The Bad Boy. In 1986, Sutherland made his first film in the United States, called Stand By Me.
He played the role of a neighborhood bully in a coming-of-age story directed by Rob Reiner. In 1987, he appeared in The Lost Boys playing the role of Vampire David.
