Theatre Career

In the year 1988, Roddy co-founded the Tinderbox theatre company in Belfast with Stephen Wright and Tim Loane. They started by producing 2 Harold Pinter plays on a small budget of £75 each. In the year 1989, the company received a cheque from Samuel Beckett – it was seen as a major endorsement in Irish theatre. From the year 1989 to the year 2000, Tinderbox ran a yearly Festival of New Irish Playwriting – he focused on bold new works. The company aimed to challenge sectarian divisions during Northern Ireland’s Troubles by using theatre to bring people together. Roddy also served as a co-artistic director.

Roddy’s stage work in Belfast caught the eye of the Royal Shakespeare Company – this led to roles in “King Baby” and “Amphibians” – and a full season with the RSC in the year 1998. He also performed in “Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme” and “In a Little World of Our Own” at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre. His role in the latter earned him the ESB/Irish Times Award for Best Supporting Actor. Both plays (exploring Northern Ireland’s complex history) helped build his reputation. In the year 2004, he was nominated for Best Actor at the ESB/Irish Times Theatre Awards for “The Weir”.

Roddy performed in Stuart Carolan’s controversial play “Defender of the Faith” in both the year 2004 and the year 2014. The story is set in the year 1986 on a remote farm in County Armagh – there an IRA-supporting family fears one of them may be a Crown informer. His performances received high praise from critics, with many considering him one of the top Irish actors of his time.
