Planning to go bike riding with Terrell on June 2, 2023, he woke up with double vision. They immediately went to the hospital, where he was taken to the Emergency Room. He was told he had a small stroke caused by a tear in an artery in his neck.
After three days at the University of Iowa Health Care, where doctors monitored him, Shawn went home. Six days after the first small stroke, he experienced a burning sensation in his head and a terrible headache. He also lost feeling in his right side and his ability to talk. Terrell called 911 as Shawn was gasping for air on the floor, and he was taken to MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines.
At the ER, doctors noticed that a blood clot was blocking the main artery in the back of his brain. Dr. Alan McDaniel advised Terrell that Shawn should undergo an emergency procedure called a thrombectomy, where a specialized catheter is guided through the artery to the clot to remove it mechanically. The procedure took 20 minutes. Shawn still struggles with some residual cognitive issues like brain fatigue and information retention.
