He consumed nearly four years there forecasting the high heat and the extreme storms caused by the dry line, a common feature in the Southern Plains dividing the dry desert air from the moist Gulf of Mexico air.
While in Texas, Mark acquired the title of Certified Broadcast Meteorologist from the American Meteorological Society. The AMS grants the CBM identification to broadcast meteorologists who meet specified criteria for scientific competence and effective communication skills in their climate presentations.
Mark then relocated to Lexington, Kentucky, recognized for its thoroughbred horse farms and bourbon. He expended over two years there predicting the weather he grew up with, including winter snow and spring storms. He then shifted back south, operating in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Even though this time had the very active 2017 hurricane season, the most impactful climate events there were not from named storms. Mark was on air for hours permitting to chase the tornadoes in the outbreaks of February 2017 and February 2016. Baton Rouge and surrounding cities also participated in historic flooding in August 2016 after over 20 inches of rain fell.
