Bettes works for The Weather Channel in Atlanta, Georgia, as a meteorologist and storm chaser. No stranger to severe weather, he has covered almost every severe weather event since he started at The Weather Channel in December 2003, including the Missouri tornado in 2011, the Joplin, and the El Reno, Oklahoma tornado in 2013. In 2009 and 2010, he was a member of the largest tornado field experiment in history, Vortex 2, to assist in better understanding this elusive phenomenon.
During his profession, Bettes has reported on nearly every type of weather imaginable. He has been through floods, wildfires, and blizzards, regularly covers hurricanes, and lives on location. During his time at The Weather Channel, Mike has experienced some of the worst storms in U.S. history. He reported live from Florida as Hurricane Ivan hit in 2004. In 2005, he also spent a week along the Mississippi Coast during Hurricane Katrina.
In 2008, Mike personally documented a 101mph wind as Hurricane Ike struck Texas and 2017 was confirmed to be a particularly dangerous hurricane season. Mike was also on the ground as Hurricane Harvey’s rain flooded most of Southeast Texas. Just two weeks thereafter, he broadcast for 90 consecutive minutes inside the eyewall of Hurricane Irma in Naples, Florida, where the winds were documented at 130mph. When Category 5 Hurricane Michael hit Florida, Mike was there in the Panhandle.
Mike previously served as chief meteorologist for WLOS-TV in Asheville, NC. Earlier, he worked for four years as a weekend meteorologist for WSYX/WTTE in Columbus, Ohio, and one year serving as a weekend meteorologist for WKEF in Dayton, Ohio. He has the National Weather Association and American Meteorological Society seals of approval.
When not working, Mike likes working out and watching college football. He also enjoys paddleboarding, mountain biking, hiking and triathlons. Mike has also been recognized for spoiling his Golden Retriever named Joplyn which he adopted after she was left homeless after the 2011 tornado in Joplin, Missouri.
