He got his first broadcasting job playing country music at a radio station in Farmington, New Mexico in 1978. He was almost fired in the first week because he was a terrible country deejay. Soon he was finally got hired at a Top 40 station.
He worked in radio for many years and loved it until he got to be about 30 years old when he felt he needed a real job. A friend told him he was running the intern program at a local television station as Wolchek worked as a traffic reporter for KNX radio in Los Angeles. He signed up but didn’t really get anywhere until another intern went to San Francisco to report the 1989 earthquake.
Shortly afterward, he took a job as a full-time reporter at KGET-TV in Bakersfield. He had to write his own stories, produce, shoot, edit, and report them too. Later, he went to KJEO-TV in Fresno. He won his first Emmy in Fresno for ‘Scambusting.’
