He hid in the basement during the storm and this made him experience frequent nightmares over the next few weeks. This went on until he went to the local library and read some books and watched videos on tornadoes and he was hooked since then.
Throughout his career as a meteorologist, Macaday has received several honors and awards including Upper Midwest Emmy Nomination issued by Upper Midwest Emmys in October 2022. He is also an Upper Midwest Emmy recipient for best daytime news coverage and for covering the effects of the historic tornado outbreak of December 2021 which affected north Iowa and southeastern Minnesota.
