He began working at the station on April 22nd, 1991 as the morning and noon meteorologist alongside Jack Aernecke then Ed O`Brien. In February 1995, LaPointe was promoted to chief meteorologist, which is his current position. Prior to joining the station, he worked at WSAV-TV in Savannah, Georgia as a full-time weather reporter. Before that, he worked at WMUR-TV in Manchester, New Hampshire as a fill-in guy.
LaPointe’s interest in weather started when he was a young child living in Big Flats, New York. His first-hand experience of one of the most devastating floods on record in the Northeast, Hurricane Belle in southern New England in 1976 among other weather events, increased his love for weather. One of his accomplishments over the years at CBS6 is the 1st locally produced forecast product on the Internet in February 1996, in the Albany-Schenectady-Troy market. LaPointe created and continues to hold a market-exclusive online historical weather database which includes daily climate information and effective storm summaries for the region centered on Albany from May 1988 till now.
He is a member of the American Meteorological Society and in 1991 received the AMS Television Seal of Approval. In April 2007, LaPointe earned the American Meteorological Society’s highest level of certification, the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist. In 1993, he was named for a station award given by the New York State Associated Press for outstanding newscast and coverage of the blizzard of 1993. Additionally, he was named the New York State Associated Press Award for best newscast coverage of the 1995 Memorial Day severe weather outbreak. It generated the devastating family of tornadoes that hit Hillsdale, New York, and Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
LaPointe was nominated for a New York State Emmy award for outstanding on-camera achievement in the spring of 1999. He had covered the Mechanicville-Stillwater tornado outbreak on Memorial Day 1998, which was credited with keeping residents safe and informed during the event. In 2004, he received a New York State Emmy Award for outstanding educational programming. He had created the highly acclaimed thirty-minute severe weather special, Storm Warning, that aired in the spring of 2003. LaPointe co-produced, wrote, and directed Storm Warning 2 in 2004, as a follow-up to Storm Warning. This earned him a New York State Broadcasters award for best educational program. He was nominated for a New York State Emmy award for broadcast excellence in the category of weather in 2014.
