Trent’s passion for weather goes back to a boyhood fear of storms that turned into a fascination with weather. Part of his fascination with weather is due to family connections to past storms. Two of his grandparents lived just miles away from the 1925 Tri-State Tornado in Southern IL, and another whirlwind in Massac County in the 1960s destroyed the home that Trent’s dad grew up in.
Having grown up watching WPSD, it is an honor to be able to work at his hometown station. He loves the task of ever-changing weather. Trent is grateful for the viewers who put their trust in him and his team’s forecast. He says without a doubt, the most significant part of his job is to assist and protect the people who depend on his team’s information. His mission is to save lives by chasing storms.
Prior to arriving to work for Local 6, Trent consumed over five years in education as a junior high and high school science teacher. While teaching, he went back and commenced working on his education in meteorology through Mississippi State University, and interned at WPSD during the summer of 2007.
Trent is a 4-time winner of the Kentucky Associated Press “Best Weather Anchor” award and was appointed for an Emmy award for his coverage of the historic December 10, 2021 tornado. Away from work, you’ll likely find Okerson at a local ballpark alongside Hansen, on the golf course, running, or finding some kind of yard work to do.
