Charisse Gibson Career

Gibson works at WWL-TV in New Orleans, LA, serving as a producer and evening Anchor/Reporter. She anchors  5 p.m., 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 10 p.m. Charisse rejoined WWL-TV in June 2019. She commenced her television profession at WWL-TV in 2010 as a desk assistant where she used that time in the newsroom to work with Anchors, Reporters, and Photographers to better sharpen her talents in front and behind the camera leading to writing as an Associate Producer for the WWL-TV Morning Show.

Charisse’s time behind the scenes working with New Orleans legends such as Eric Paulsen and Sally-Ann Roberts led to a profession as a TV News Producer at WLOX-TV on the Mississippi Gulf Coast where she would jump in front of the camera from time to time as a  Reporter and Fill-in Anchor. She also spent time in Shreveport, LA at KSLA News 12  and FOX 19 Now in Cincinnati, OH as a co-anchor/host of the “Morning Xtra,”  breaking news anchor as well as Producer/Host of “Cincinnati Connection” a public affairs TV show exploring social and community problems throughout Cincinnati.

During her time at FOX 19 NOW, Charisse was Emmy-nominated for her documentary on the Freedom Riders and their relationship to the Greater Cincinnati area including the training of hundreds of learners at Miami University for the Mississippi Summer Project or Freedom Summer. With a deep interest in history and culture, she produced a special report named“The Migration of Sound” exploring how jazz music traveled the Mississippi River and found its way into Cincinnati’s West End community.

Now that Charisse is home, she shifts her concentration to the ever-changing landscape of New Orleans and surrounding regions. In her Emmy-nominated series “Treme: Death of a Neighborhood, Survival of a Culture,” she explores the countless factors that destroyed America’s first black neighborhood and the birthplace of Jazz.

Continuing her passion for community problems, her Emmy-nominated special report “Victims of Progress Pt 1 & 2” explores how the petrochemical enterprise is quite literally erasing history as districts mostly lived in by black citizens whose families have been there for generations have been converted into “industrial/residential” districts.

Her job goes beyond documentaries, Charisse has reported live in the area in the aftermath of an invasion on an NOPD officer in the French Quarter, the first journalist on the scene. She has reported many hours of coverage during breaking news, Hurricanes, such as the Hard Rock Collapse and Elections. She is also a trained interviewer and community advocate.

Charisse’s latest project “The Talk: A Hard Conversation Regarding Race in America” was the champion of both a national and regional Edward R Murrow Award for Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. “The Talk”, done after the killing of George Floyd, was written, produced, and hosted by Cher and filmed by photojournalist Derek Waldrip. It focuses on conversations countless Black parents have with their children at a certain age on how to stay safe in America. The documentary opened itself up to a series that persists today.

Charisse attended Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College in Baton Rouge where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication/Media Studies. She is also an involved member of the National Association of Black Journalists, appointed (2022) as President of the New Orleans Association of Black Journalists.
