Charles Stanley was an American Pastor and writer best known for serving as the senior Pastor Emeritus of Atlanta’s First Baptist Church for 51 years. Additionally, he was also the founder and president of In Touch Ministries, which broadcasts his sermons on television.

Charles Stanley Career

Stanley joined the staff of Atlanta’s First Baptist Church in 1969 and in 1971 he was named as s senior pastor.  Additionally,  he received the motivational book Think and Grow Rich as a young pastor. In 1972, he debuted The Chapel Hour, a half-hour religious television program. In Touch, Ministries was founded in 1977 by Stanley with the mission of leading people worldwide into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and strengthening the local church. This show first aired on the Christian Broadcasting Network in 1978. Moreover, the show was translated into 50 different languages.

“In Touch” is broadcast on approximately 500 radio stations, 300 television stations, and several satellite networks in the United States. The networks include Trinity Broadcasting Network and the Inspiration Network (INSP). His sermons, as well as other audio and video programming, were found on the In Touch website. To spread the Gospel as quickly as possible, In Touch employs tools such as radio, television, magazines, and digital media. However, he chose the name In Touch because it was inspired by a Living Bible he owned. In 1985, he was elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1985.

Much of his photography had appeared in the ministries In Touch magazine, as well as in other materials such as the In Touch wall and desk calendars.

In 2017, Stanely named Anthony George to succeed him as senior pastor of First Baptist Church at some point in the future. Apart from that, he announced his retirement as senior pastor and transition to pastor emeritus on September 13, 2020. On the other hand,  Charles had stated unequivocally that he does not believe in retirement, so he will continue to work at In Touch Ministries. The Q&A segment was designed to help the audience better understand the sermon’s content by using questions that the average listener might ask. In late 2006 the segment was discontinued, and he was the sole replacement. In early 2007, Stanley began teaching his “30 Life Principles” in the final segment of the “In Touch” TV and radio shows. The church member said that Charles will be able to keep his position as long as he does not remarry, according to the bylaws of First Baptist Atlanta.  Additionally, Anna died on November 10, 2014, due to unknown reasons.

Stanley’s wife Anna J. Stanley, filed for divorce on June 22, 1993, following their separation in the spring of 1992. At that time, the Moody Radio Network station in Atlanta (then-WAFS) took Stanley’s daily broadcast off the air, concluding that there was no sign of reconciliation. Moreover, on February 16, 2000 divorce papers were filed for the final time and they legally separated.
