Chris Franklin Career

Franklin works for WWL-TV Channel 4 in New Orleans, serving as a noon and weekend morning Chief Meteorologist. He came to the Local Weather Expert Forecast team in 2016 but has been on the air in New Orleans since 2005. “Chris’s passion for weather and science started because he was scared to death of the weather! He dreaded dark skies, thunder in the distance, and especially seeing hurricane coordinates on the television screen.”Chris brings with him nearly 20 years of weather forecasting experience in New Orleans as well as the flavor of the local community.

Born and raised in Metairie, Louisiana,  Chris graduated from Brother Martin High and the University of South Alabama, obtaining the Senior Meteorology Award for academics and involvement in the meteorology program. He also has the AMS Television Seal of Approval. His broadcast profession started in Topeka, Kansas and after a year of tracking tornadoes and driving via blizzards, he returned to New Orleans just prior to Hurricane Katrina struck the coast.

Chris has reported on some major weather events including Hurricanes Katrina, Gustav, Rita, Ike, and Isaac, and most recently the active seasons of 2021 and 2020 including Hurricane Ida. He’s also reported the Mississippi River flooding in 2011,   the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the ice storm of 2014. Chris has also interviewed a few celebrities including the original Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler! He has been featured on the Weather Channel and FOX News Channel.

Chris has earned several awards from the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters and the Press Club of New Orleans.  For 2021, he and the whole Local Weather Expert Team were recognized with Best Weather Coverage in the nation from Broadcast and Cable magazine for their effort during Hurricane Ida. Apart from being a meteorologist, he is an emcee at local events and a frequent guest speaker.
