Higgins states that he has a great experience in the St. Louis area stating that he cannot forget the Drought of the year 1988, the cold winters of the late 70s, the Great Flood of 1993, and the Blizzard of 1982. In addition, he also says he cannot forget the Good Friday Tornado, and the New Year’s Eve Tornado.

His television career began at FOX 2 where he was working as an intern in the year 1990. Later on, after his graduation, he moved into the heart of “Tornado Alley”, joining the people of Joplin, Missouri. There, he stayed for two years working as a Chief Meteorologist for KODE-TV. Later on year 1992, he moved to FOX 2 News in St. Louis where he was posted as the weekend meteorologist. He later moved to lead forecaster for the Ox 2 News at 11 p.m. on weekdays in the year 2014. At the moment, he forecasts the weather every weekday morning.

The month of October 2002 saw him win his first Emmy award out of the eight Emmy awards he holds. He received an award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Science for weather forecasting and reporting. Later on, in July of 2006, he became the first-ever St. Louis meteorologist to receive the American Meteorological Society’s Certified Broadcast(CBM) designation. This was after passing a rigorous written test covering many aspects of atmospheric and natural sciences.

The month of June 2003 saw him realize his long-term dream when he was commissioned to be an officer in the Air Force Reserves. During the 2008 summer, he was deployed to the deserts in the Middle East to support the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. In addition, he counts himself honored to be the United States Air Force Weather Officer of the Year for the Reserve Component twice.

In the year 2013, he was serving on the Storm Prediction Center backup team. While there he was sent out the first real-world Tornado Watch ever which was issued by the United States Air Force. Later on, finally, in the year 2019, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and he hopes to retire as a “Light Colonel” in the year 2023.
