While in the station he provided play-by-play for Harding University. His rose to fame in the “land of opportunity” was interviewing then-Gov. Bill Clinton.

Chris’s broadcasting career brought him back to Salt Lake City for seven years, where he won numerous broadcasting awards for sports and news coverage. In the ’80s he was the voice of the Weber State Wildcats and also covered the Utah Jazz. His journalism career then took him to Idaho Falls, Idaho at KIFI News Group where he served as the sports director from April 1992 to September 1994. He had a blast covering the great outdoors and did it all, shooting, producing, anchoring, reporting, editing, laughing, and having fun. While in the station Maathuis received awards for the state’s best local sports coverage.

Maathuis then moved to Binghamton, New York where he worked at WBNG TV 12 serving as a sports director from September 1994 to February 1997. He wrote, produced, edited, and shooting sports with an emphasis on local coverage. He also participated in Charity involvement and covered the Jets, Giants,  Syracuse, Penn State, and the Mets. While in the station Chris won the state awards for sports coverage and the best single sports story on Kentucky Derby winner Exterminator.

Chris then eventually moved to Las Vegas to help KLAS, where he leads their sports department in its continued domination of the market. Maathuis’s coverage of Boxing, high school sports, Mixed Martial Arts, UNLV, and other sporting events is unmatched in Las Vegas. He is an Emmy award-winning sportscaster, who is also the host of the award-winning UNLV Game Time basketball and football coaches show.
