He chases severe weather during the tornado season in the station’s First Alert Storm Tracker vehicle featuring all the weather tools needed including Doppler radar, in order to keep East Texas informed and safe. Gottschalk started his career at KLTV as a camera op where he worked part-time. Gradually learning more about the production system, he became a newscast director and even carried out some minor management duties. While still working at the station, Gottschalk would attended online classes from Mississippi State University.
He tracked many tornadoes and has witnessed two in person and has also seen a funnel cloud track right above his house. Hurricane Hermine tracked through Florida during his honeymoon, leaving him and his wife stuck in a hotel. Gottschalk has forecasted weather for every part of the day to the public from morning to overnight. He uses and operates the Weather MAX system tp produce his weather forecasts. He has seen an assortment of East Texas weather from forecasting sunny skies to breaking into regularly scheduled TV to report on severe weather and tornadoes.
