Darren has been well recognized for his work by the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and rewarded with their seal of approval. He has also been awarded by the National Weather Association (NWA) and holds their seal of approval.

Being born in West Hartford, Sweeney grew up driving and watching the station and is now happy to be forecasting for the station. His passion for weather started at a very young age, due to New England’s wild weather extremes. During the storms, Darren would grab a video camera and go outdoors while everyone else was taking shelter inside.

Sweeney has forecasted New England weather and therefore is familiar with everything about the weather.  While working for a Springfield TV station as a meteorologist Darren has managed to win several awards including the two Associated Press awards for coverage of historic flooding in October 2005 and for Best Weathercast in 2006.

Darren has also reported live during severe weather events, including in May 2006, massive flooding that took place along the Merrimack River. Recently Sweeney was honored by Professional Journalists for his coverage of the 2009 EF-1 Wethersfield tornado by the Connecticut Society with a ”Breaking news” award.

Previously before coming to New England, While at WFTX-TV in Fort Myers, Fla, he gained experience forecasting severe weather and chasing hurricanes, wherein a couple of instances, he was deployed to New Orleans to help sister stations cover Tropical Storm “Isidore” and Hurricane “Lilly” in 2002.

Throughout his career, Sweeney covered some of the biggest storms. During his tenure at NBC Connecticut, he was part of the team that forecasted during Hurricane Irene, Superstorm Sandy,  and tornado touchdown. Away from his duty line, you’ll find Darren enjoying one of his famous road trips exploring beautiful New England (especially in the summer).

Sweeney is a proud tenure Associate Professor at his alma mater at CCSU teaching in the Department of Journalism. Darren likes mentoring students who are looking to get into the exciting field of journalism and broadcast journalism.  He also works on the board of the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists. Sweeney volunteers his time at many events raising money and awareness for different types of cancer research and helping homeless animals find good homes. Darren’s motto is “Adopt Don’t Shop.”
