In August 2019, he retired from anchoring the evening news and permanently serves as host. He has been working at WSHM-TV since January 1992 hence he has worked at WSHM-TV for over 31 years. While still working at WSHM-TV, from 2000 to 2014, he also worked at UMass where he served as an adjunct professor for the reporting and writing course in the Journalism department.
Prior to working at WSHM-TV, he worked at WWLP-TV in Springfield, Massachusetts where he served as an anchor and reporter for 12 years. He had previously spent some time working at WHMP Radio in Northampton where he worked for 9 years. He kickstarted his journalism career in 1970 by working at WMAS based in Springfield.
Dave is an active member of the Jimmy Fund Council of Western Massachusetts. In addition to that, he also emcees several events all across New England for the Jimmy Fund. Dave also emcees numerous charity golf tournaments, including the very popular concerts with the Dan Kane Singers and charity golf tournaments. Madsen is involved and emcees the annual fundraising walk for Baystate Health’s Rays of Hope Walk.
Madsen has won several awards including being inducted in the New England Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Science’s Silver Circle in 2011. He was also inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in September 2017 making him the first TV broadcaster from Western Mass to be inducted there. He also received the “Jimmy” Award as well as the Jimmy Funds prestigious Bob Cheyne Lifetime Achievement Award. Some of the other awards he has won include the Sr. M. Catherine Laboure Award, the William D. Mullins Man of the Year Award, and the Brightside Golf Classic’s William Corriden Award.
