Gerald Owens Career
Owens works at WRAL-TV where he serves the station as an Anchor. He built his news philosophy through an internship at ABC News “Nightline” during Operation Desert Shield in the year 1990. Additionally, he explains that there is nothing like being upfront at a major news operation during one of the biggest stories of the century. He explains that this was a hands-on, day-to-day, and reporting job. Later on, from there, he joined WTRK-TV in Norfolk, Virginia in the year 1995. Moreover, he was a political reporter/anchor for about three years.
Later on, he went on to join WUSA-TV and spent three years as an anchor on the morning show. He then went on to try something new in sports reporting. There, he was playing basketball in college and it was a chance to take a break from the news for about a year to try something that came naturally to him. At that time, his career path was put into perspective on September 11, 2001. After a few months, little else mattered at the TV station or in the country. This made him realize how important news was for his community and his life. He explains that it is what he meant to do.
Gerald Owens WTAL
He explains that that made the switch back to news and to his next stop at WRAL-TV. Owens arrived at the station the day before the famous ice storm of 2022. Gerald explains that he chose WTAL because he believes it stands for some of the values he tries to bring to work every day. These values include a sense of community, credibility, and integrity. His new philosophy is that his integrity is everything to him. He explains that he had someone state that Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking. Owens further explains that he tried to live by that at work and at home.
Among his most memorable assignments is a self-imposed assignment he did. This was on the 11th of September 2001 when he was working as a sports anchor. He explains that during this day, he was sitting at home on his day off when the first plane hit the tower in New York. When the second tower hit and then the Pentagon was just a few miles away from his house, he went to work because he could not sit still. He explains that he had to be part of it in any way, he could. Gerald further explains that it was on the 7th of December 1941 that he started all over again in his own backyard. During his free time, he enjoys playing golf, although he is not very good at it.
Gerald explains that his family on the other hand enjoys riding bikes, hiking, and camping(in the backyard). His favorite books include Walter Cronkite’s biography and any book written by Stephen King. On the other hand, his favorite book is “The Godfather” parts 1 and 2, “Jaws” and “Boys from Brazil.” He explains that what he likes most about North Carolina is the clear and blue sky.
