Always having an urge to be on the radio, Jim received his first opportunity when he was 15. The radio WRLV AM/FM in his hometown wanted a student to come by and record a duo of promos that kept the society up to date on school news.
Prior to working at WKYT-T, Jim worked as a meteorologist at WYMT for 12 years, from March 12, 2001, to 2013. Before that, he worked at WRLV, while also completing high school and beginning the first part of his college career at Prestonsburg Community College (now known as Big Sandy Community & Technical College). When he turned 16, Caldwell got another opportunity to get into the broadcasting field early, as his high school electricity teacher asked him to be his color commentator and statistician.
After completing high school, Jim’s first job was recording the evening weather and some commercials. Daily, he only put in two or three hours after school and before he knew it, he was doing everything from cleaning the station, taking out the trash, writing commercials, dabbling in sales, or washing the station vehicle. During all of the juggling of numerous assignments, Jim was also on the air live every day from 3 to 6 p.m. and all weekend weather.
