Furthermore, from 1987 to 1997, Jim was the play-by-play announcer for NBC Sports’ NFL games.

Before joining Cleveland, he provided play-by-play hockey and basketball coverage for the Satellite News Channel in Burlington, VT. On the 25th May 2011, during the 11 pm newscast, Donovan revealed he had been battling leukemia for a decade, and that he would be taking a leave of absence to undergo a (what would be a successful) bone marrow transplant. He met with his bone marrow donor on Thanksgiving evening in 2013, when Dallas Gentry from Wise, Virginia, visited his family.
After another 10 years, Donovan disclosed on the 31st of May 2023, that his leukemia had relapsed and would be once again undergoing treatment. On the 10th of September, after he broadcasts the opening game of the 2023 season for the Browns, he announced he would step away from announcing Browns games to undergo leukemia treatment.
A little over two months following stepping away from his assignments as 3News sports anchor and radio play-by-play voice of the Cleveland Browns to undergo treatment for leukemia, Jim returned to work in November 2023.
