Additionally, he also serves as a studio announcer and a producer at Metro Traffic. John has covered major stories like the search for JKF Jr, the blackout of 2003, the Tropical storm Floyd floods, Egypt air 990, the Long Island fires in 1995, and TWA flight 800. John also covered the tragic event that happened on September 11th, 2001 at the World Trade Center while the News Copter 7 was airborne, the second plane passed his helicopter and ended more than five hours later. Parts of his work regarding September 11th are exhibited at Newseum in Washington, DC. Also, his memories regarding the September 11th ordeal have been included in two books; Covering Catastrophe (Bonus Books, 2002) and Running Towards Danger (Rowan and Littlefield, 2002) with the country’s leading journalists.

Del received an Emmy Award in 2008 for best On-Camera Talent: Live Reporter, hence becoming the first helicopter reporter to receive such an award. Additionally, Del serves on the Board of Directors for the National ENG Helicopter Association.
