Her first career was at WNDS in Derry, New Hampshire as a general assignment reporter. She was quickly promoted to anchor two evening newscasts serving the Boston markets and New Hampshire.
From there, Mary moved to Rockford, Illinois where she served as the morning anchor at the ABC affiliate WTVO. She moved ahead to anchor the 5,6, and 10 p.m. newscasts for about four years. In honor of her service to society, Mary earned a proclamation from the Mayor of Rockford announcing it “Mary Stoker Smith Day” after it was declared she was heading to Philadelphia to be the main anchor at Tribune’s WB17.
While in Philadelphia, she transferred from WB17 to KYW CBS 3, where she was the weekend evening anchor for almost four years. During the week, Mary served as a general assignment reporter, reporting on three states — Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Mary reported on a wide range of stories while at KYW, including crime, education, politics, fires, and features. While there, she was also engaged with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, participating in fundraising occasions and an annual Mother’s Day weekend walk at the well-known Philadelphia Art Museum. During this time, Mary also became part of the National Association for Black Journalists and she has been an involved member ever since.
An avid runner, Mary likes to take advantage of Milwaukee’s trails and lakefront. She also loves reading, and playing the piano and has been known to spend some quality time shopping. She was crowned Miss Wisconsin USA in 1996 and spent the following year touring the state speaking on a wide range of topics to diverse groups.
