Matt O’Donnell is an American Anchor/ Reporter/Host working for WPVI-TV/6abc News serving the station as a Co-Anchor for Action Morning News and as a Co-Host for the Sunday political show Inside Story. Asides from this, he is the host and producer of the True Philadelphia Podcast. He has been working with this station since December 1996 when he joined the station as a General Assignment Reporter.

Matt O’Donnell Career

O’Donnell works for WPVI-TV where he serves the station as a co-anchor for the Action News Mornings and as a co-host, host, and producer. He joined the station in the month of December 1996 achieving his dream to work at the station he grew up watching.

O’Donnell has also stepped into just about every community in the Delaware and Lehigh Valleys in his many years of street reporting and tackled assignments that took him across the country and around the world. He has been privileged to travel to Brazil, England, California, and Nevada. Asides from this, he also headed into the skies in a life-changing flight with the Blue Angels.

This is in addition to covering three political conventions(St. Paul and two in Philadelphia), and interviewing two presidents (President Obama and President Trump. He has also covered countless pivotal stories which have shaped the region over the past two decades.

He kick-started his career in upstate New York days after graduating from the University of Delaware. Asides from this, he has served as a news reporter for WICZ-TV in Binghamton where he was covering local news and politics. These include the 1994 New York governor’s race where he was privileged to interview George Pataki, the eventual winner, twice.

He then made a big move and joined WSTM-TV in Syracuse,  New York where he helped track down an accused murderer for an exclusive interview and visited a community that saw 300+ inches of snowfall in one season. There, he provided daily coverage of a gruesome series of deaths that one day became the basis of the cable series “Village of the Damned.”

He got his first big break when he moved back to Philadelphia in order to join the Action News team a place he worked proudly since then. Asides from this, he also joined the Air Force National Guard on a trip to England shortly after the 9/11 attacks. He flew supersonic with a member of the Blue Angels over the Atlantic City. There, he went on to live in the Brazilian rain forest for about four days with experts from the Philadelphia zoo in order to help protest the golden lion tamarin.

In the course of his career, he has also interviewed Bernie Sanders, John McCain, Hillary Clinton,  and Sarah Palin. This is in addition to interviewing former presidents of the United States, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. These interviews were during the presidential campaigns which brought them to the region. He has also spent about two days along the Jersey Shore Awaiting the arrival of Hurricane Irene. This nearly became the first hurricane to hit New Jersey in more than 100 years.

He has greeted Kevin Bacon, Morgan Freeman, Naomi Judd, and James Brown during their visits to town. Matt joined the Eagles on a playoff run, he was there for the Eagles and Phillies championship parades. He has visited nearly every town in the region, covering the triumphs, tragedies, highs, and lows of Action News viewers throughout the years.

O’Donnell works alongside Tamala Edward, Karen Rogers, and David Murphy every weekday morning from 4-7 Am in order to help the sleepyheads of Delaware and Lehigh Valleys wake up. He has held this petition since the year 2004. He and Tam alternate as hosts for the Inside Story where they engage panelists to debate the important issues that face and challenge newsmakers who make decisions.

His podcast, The True Philadelphia Podcast is his most recent project and he sits with the people that help mold the ongoing conversation on what is great about the Philadelphia area: Madeline Bell, Larry Krasner, Jay Wright, and the original Phillie Phanatic David Raymond.
