He came to Denver7 as Chief Meteorologist in June 2004. Mike relishes sharing his knowledge of the weather with the old and young, visiting more than 50 schools, clubs, and service organizations every year.
After obtaining his degree in Meteorology from the University of Wisconsin, he started to work in 1976 at Weather Central, a Madison-based private weather consulting company centering on forecasts for ski areas, power utilities, agri-business, the Wisconsin TV Network, and more than 40 other radio and TV stations nationwide.
In 1979, Nelson was appointed Executive Vice President of Weather Central and managed a staff of 14 meteorologists. He aided in providing forecasts crucial to the construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. While in Madison, Nelson collaborated with co-worker meteorologist, Terry Kelly, in devising one of the first computer weather graphics systems for television. From 1979 to 1984, Nelson installed TV weather computers at more than 50 TV stations all over the nation. In 1982, he brought the first weather computer to Colorado and taught legendary Denver weatherman Stormy Rottman about that system.
In 1985, Mike and his family drove to St. Louis, Missouri where he operated as Chief Meteorologist at a local station until 1991. While in St. Louis, he served as a member of the American Meteorological Society’s Board of Broadcast Meteorology, endorsing candidates to receive the AMS Seal of Approval for Television Weather-casting. Mike has been honored with 18 Emmy awards for Outstanding Weather Anchor. In 2001, he was honored by the Colorado Broadcasters Association as their “Citizen of the Year” for his volunteer work in Colorado schools.
