From then on, his stories have led to a business closing that misled the public, exposed government waste, and corruption, and sparked criminal investigations that sent people to prison.
Among his biggest accomplishments was to keep the innocent from being jailed in the first place. He has also covered a series of stories in 2018 about police roadside drug test kits where he revealed how people wound up wrongly jailed because the tests falsely determined they had drugs in their car.
Through his investigation, he discovered 145 self-positives in Georgia in just a year. The project, “$2 Tests: Bad Arrests,” led law enforcement agencies worldwide to review their drug test kit policies, with some dropping the use of them completely. It is this investigation that won the prestigious 2018 Peabody Award, one of only 30 honorees from around the world.
Over the years, his investigative work has also garnered two national Edward R. Murrow awards plus more than 20 regional Emmy Awards. He is also the recipient of the Henry W. Grady Mid-Career Alumni Award from the University of Georgia. The year 2015 saw him being named to the Silver Circle, a lifetime achievement honor given by the Southeast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Prior to joining FOX 5 News, he was working for WMC-TV in Memphis, Tennessee where he was serving the station as a reporter. He has also worked for WMAZ-TV in Macon, and WYFF-TV in Greenville, South Carolina. He began his first professional journalism in the year 1979 working as a Sports Writer for his hometown newspaper, the Athens Banner-Herald. Asides from this, he worked as a full-time Sports Editor for the Athens Observer in the year 1982 while completing his journalism degree at the University of Georgia.
When he was about 29, he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. In order to control his disease, he made a turn to run. After this, he became an avid marathoner and has also competed in every Peachtree Road Race since the year 1993. He is also a lifelong Brave fan and a choice that somehow has had no negative effect on his happy marriage.
