Now he is a division operations staff officer and before, he worked as a battalion operations staff officer, company executive officer, human resources/administrative officer, and rifle platoon leader. Hughes was sent to Ukraine from 2016 to 2017 as part of the European Reassurance Initiative, Joint Multinational Training Group Ukraine, Operation Atlantic Resolve, and Task Force Tomahawk. He assisted in training the Ukrainian Army and worked with the British, Lithuanian, Polish, Canadian, and Danish militaries to help build Ukraine’s first-ever Combat Training Center.

Awards and decorations are the Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal,  Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, National Defense Service Medal, Army Certificate of Achievement, Army Service Ribbon, and a Citation of Commendation from the Oklahoma State Senate and Oklahoma House of Representatives for being 1 of 16 out of a total 64 soldiers to graduate from Officer Candidate School, and for his commitment to education. He works on the Board of Directors of the Kansas City Autism Training Center/Astra Day School.
