Hughes is a news anchor at KMBC9 News. He anchors in Kansas City, Missouri, from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. –  9 a.m., and noon. Before he worked at KMBC’s sister station, KOCO ABC 5 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma as a general assignment reporter and fill-in anchor, Hughes has worked in these areas:  at KSWT CBS 13 in Yuma, Arizona, both in Grand Junction, Colorado, and KRGV ABC 5 in McAllen Texas as an anchor, reporter, and producer. 

When he was at USC, Hughes was the host of “Political Platform” and “CU@USC,” which was selected as the best college television talk show by Spin Magazine. In the greater Los Angeles area, the show reaches almost 2 million homes. Hughes was voted best male host and best senior host for his good work. Grammy Award-winning band Train, actors Gary Sinise and Laurence Fishburne, former USC quarterback Mark Sanchez and  Star Wars creator George Lucas are the interviews he will never forget. In the Kansas Army National Guard, he works as an infantry officer.

Now he is a division operation staff officer and before worked as a  battalion operations staff officer, company executive officer, human resources/administrative officer, and rifle platoon leader. Hughes was sent to Ukraine from 2016 to 2017 as part of the European Reassurance Initiative, Joint Multinational Training Group Ukraine, Operation Atlantic Resolve, and Task Force Tomahawk. He assisted in training the Ukrainian Army and worked with the British, Lithuanian, Polish, Canadian, and Danish militaries to help build Ukraine’s first-ever Combat Training Center.

Awards and decorations are the Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal,  Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, National Defense Service Medal, Army Certificate of Achievement, Army Service Ribbon, and a Citation of Commendation from the Oklahoma State Senate and Oklahoma House of Representatives for being 1 of 16 out of a total 64 soldiers to graduate from Officer Candidate School, and for his commitment to education. He works on the Board of Directors of the Kansas City Autism Training Center/Astra Day School. Hughes loves spending time with his wife Rhea, and children Robbie, Rowan, and Rhen. He also likes running, snowboarding, surfing, playing guitar, and volunteering.
