In 2017, Estevez was in the air to cover the devastation left behind on the island of Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria. Due to Central Florida’s large Puerto Rican population, the story is of special significance to the Orlando area. The most important and impactful moment he covered was in June 2016, the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub where 49 people lost their lives.
After the victims’ names were mentioned that first night, Jorge interviewed someone close to a person who had died. At this moment the tragedy became so real to so many people, that he was asked to host the first organized vigil where 50,000 people gathered around Lake Eola to grieve for the lives lost.
In a short time, Estevez worked for the CBS station, WFOR, in Miami after leaving Orlando. While there he managed to win an award for one of his special reports on traffic patterns in South Florida as his first of nine Emmy Awards. After a few years, Jorge later returned to WFTV. Estevez got his first broadcasting job at News 12 The Bronx as a reporter and in less than a year he was promoted to the position of morning anchor. For his Emmy-nominated story of a 12-year-old boy-turned-author after his battle with bone marrow cancer, Estevez remembers his time in New York City.
