In addition, ​he leads and coaches upcoming journalists as a mentor. For years he has been the guide trainer for the NABJ-FAMU Journalism Short Course, instructing learners in broadcast during an intensive weekend course. Rod also worked in Raleigh at St. Augustine’s University as a Fall 2021 adjunct professor of communications.

Apart from being a journalist, he is a proud Life representative of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and serves as the International Director of Publicity for the fraternity. Likewise, Rod is a charter representative of the Sigma Xi Sigma chapter in Tampa and the past 2nd Vice President. Since relocating to Raleigh, he has also represented the NAACP and joined the Eta Sigma Chapter of the fraternity.
