Tran was a freelance reporter for KVVU-FOX in Las Vegas in the spring of 2004, where he won an Associated Press Breaking News Award for being the first to report that the Ohio freeway sniper, Charles McCoy Jr., was arrested at a casino in the overnight hours. He also went live many times that day for many major cities like Fox News as well as Los Angeles.
All things San Francisco Giants during the team’s run to the World Series and a victory parade were one of the most fun stories he has covered. In 2000 he freelanced and reported at KATU –ABC in Portland, Oregon before arriving in San Francisco. When he became the morning reporter at the Orange County News Channel in the Los Angeles market he managed to say goodbye to the rain and hello to sunshine.
He worked at KGMB-CBS in Honolulu, Hawaii as a reporter. Here he won a Society of Professional Journalists Business Story of the Year in 1998.
