Spahr works as a Freelance Meteorologist at KRON-TV. Continuous troop deployments generated plenty of daily news during the first Gulf War near the infantry base of Fort Benning. He landed on the other side of the front with blue skies and cool winds while crossing the Mississippi, which had whitecaps. He was in Springfield, Missouri by the mid-’90s. The weather was very inconsistent over the region and changed every ten minutes. On the other side of the viewing area, it was not unheard of to have Winter Storm Watch at the same time as a Tornado Watch. Even in the dead of night springs were often filled by very loud thunderstorms.
Spahr moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in the late ’90s, which at that time, was a mini Hurricane Alley. Additionally, the Winters and the ‘Appalachian Wedge provided challenges, which is a recipe for ice storms. A major ‘bomb’ developed off the East Coast (deep low-pressure system) on January 2000, and almost two feet of snow paralyzed the Raleigh-Durham area (The Triangle) for days in 24 hours. In Palm Springs he did morning and noon weather which was in 2003. Spahr’s team was the first on and last off the air, as the evening gust front, spawned by Arizona Monsoon thunderstorms, brought winds of more than 40mph to the Coachella Valley the residents were shaken.
Weather fronts in the late Spring, which often don’t produce rain, can deliver winds, blowing sand and dust, often shutting down major roads. Before moving to the Bay Area and joining KRON4, He briefly had stops in San Diego and later Fresno. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, he works as a fill-in meteorologist during the week and provides predictions for KRON-ON. In 2009 he earned his AMS seal after completing coursework with Mississippi State.
