Delgado is a cancer survivor who took a break off from chasing weather to undergo a stem cell transplant (a bone marrow transplant). This was after experiencing various symptoms like vertigo, bone ache, and migraines. She then became depressed and only shared the news with her closest family and friends. She was always making excuses for her fatigue and how she looked like. Delgado says that the moment was very awful and stressful.
Delgado did 6 rounds of chemotherapies before she went for the stem cell transplant. She says that the transplant was a fear to her because of the high dose of chemotherapy and the loss of her hair. Her stem cells were now collected which she says was not a fun process, and was now prepared for the transplant. She was isolated in the hospital for 21 days, and when the days were over, she got released to go home, but again, still under isolation for more than a hundred days.
During this period, her white blood cells were regenerating, meaning she did not have an immune system, and she suffered from severe pain and fatigue. She could not consume anything raw like fruits and salads, and when she was outside, she would have to put on a mask to protect her immune system. She says that wearing a mask at the time felt very awful since everyone would stare at her and automatically know she had cancer.
Delgado supports the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society heavily. This is an organization that helps patients suffering from cancer with financial help, information on clinical trials, and many others.
